A Rich History. Emerald Bay has long been recognized for its beauty and utility—by European explorers like Cabrillo, who noted the position of Emerald Bay on his maps, to early twentieth century farmers who appreciated Emerald Bay's fertile ground and temperate climate. And, as Southern California grew, word spread of a special place, a peaceful bay located in a beautiful hillside setting. A place where families could come to relax on holiday. And come they did, down the new Pacific Coast Highway, to wander the hillsides and wade in the surf.

Soon, people began building permanent homes in Emerald Bay, and by the 1930's, Emerald Bay Community Association was formed to ensure the best qualities of this unique locale were preserved. Development was carefully planned and managed, even in the earliest days. And the beach was reserved for the exclusive use of residents and guests—a fact that remains true even today.

Over the years, new homes have sprouted from the hills like wildflowers, PCH has grown from two lanes to four, and many other changes have taken place at Emerald Bay. But one fact remains: The enveloping canopy of sycamores and eucalyptus, and the sound of the waves gently crashing on the sand still give Emerald Bay its uniquely tranquil atmosphere.
